On Saturday, March 17, GGA hosted a table at the Atlanta Science Festival’s Discovery Day to teach geography by using the Giant Traveling Map. Hundreds of kids showed up to run around the map (rain or shine!) as we explored the regions of Georgia through virtual field trips and studying specimens of natural resources from the state. Similarly, on Saturday, March 24, GGA went to Atlanta Science Festival’s Exploration Expo held in Piedmont Park this year, and our booth was titled “Where Would You Be Without Geography?”. Over 300 kids from all over Atlanta participated in our Giant Traveling Map activity with Google Cardboard, explored the ecoregions of Georgia with our coloring activity, and learned about different fossils and their geographic and historical importance. In addition, we offered free testing of local soils for lead content using handheld x-ray fluorescence. If you’re interested in learning more about the opportunity to understand soils in your backyard, please contact us!
