Urban ATL Geospatial STEM Academy Going Strong!


The Urban Atlanta Geospatial STEM Academy is Rolling! Week 3 Begins…Weeks 1 and 2 were a huge success!

This year’s Urban Atlanta Geospatial STEM Academy is off to a great start!  You may remember The Georgia Geographic Alliance and Dr. Timothy L. Hawthorne were funded with a $75,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to create the nation’s first geospatial STEM Academy focused on community geography, GIS, and citizen science.  100 youth learning geospatial technologies and ArcGIS Online for free in Atlanta!  Great news: the first two weeks are in the books.  Students from around the region have worked with the ATL Beltline, the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Intown Collaborative Ministries, and the Westside Atlanta Land Trust to map tree species, food availability in relation to sidewalk quality, and emotions as they relate to greenspace and the built environment. Today we begin week three of four.  Our program is the only one of its kind in the country, and our students are achieving great results while having fun and learning new geospatial technologies.
